Songbbird Winnie Ho to Appear at MOD--DAC 2012

If you are visiting Singapore's inaugural MOD-Digital Audio Convention 2012 on 25/8-26/8, make a date with pop pop music's Winnie Ho. Leslie Loh, pop pop music's CEO says:

"Winnie Ho, Malaysia's rising Chinese Jazz songbird, is a guest singer at next week's inaugural MOD Digital Audio Convention (DAC), to be held on 25th and 26th August, at Raffles Convention Centre.

Fresh from her appearance at the just concluded Tianjin Jazz Festival, Winnie Ho will be singing some songs from her popular album "The Jazzy Sounds of Teresa Teng" and at the same time, promoting the latest "Definitive Audiophile Edition" to the audiophiles in Singapore.

The album sold well in the recent KLIAV and Taiwan's TAA Hifi Show and the Singapore's distributor for pop pop music, S2S music, hopes to expand their Chinese repertoire with this strategic partnership with pop pop music.

Winnie's showcase time:

Saturday 25th August: 3PM and 5PM
Sunday 26th August:3PM and 5PM    "

Free Download of One High Resolution Music File from 'The Jazzy Sounds of Teresa Teng'

I got an email from Leslie, head honcho of Pop Pop Music, today. Its header reads "Malaysia's First Ever FOC High-Res 96Khz/24bit FOC download". This must be music (pun intended) to the ears of those who have a CAS running.

Leslie says, "We are offering the first-ever FOC high-res (96 KHz/24 bit) download of ONE song from our latest album: Winnie HO "The Jazzy Sounds of Teresa Teng". Please help us to broadcast in your blog, for the benefits of your readers."

So there you go. The download instructions from Leslie are as follows:

1) please paste this link onto your browser http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11040677/%E5%BF%98%E8%A8%98%E4%BB%96Forgetting%20Him.wav

2) once the file is properly downloaded, right click on your mouse to save the source (a WAV file) onto your pc hard drive. depending on your browser, this service may be chargeable. For example, if you use Apple QuickTime, you need QuickTime Pro, which is chargeable. If you use Google Chrome, then this service is totally FOC.

I don't have a CAS so I can't benefit from this very nice gesture from Pop Pop Music. I am curious though to know the sound quality of the hi res track. So if you are one of the lucky ones who can play this in your system, please share some comments on your listening experience here.

The Jazzy Sound Of Teresa Teng, Press Conference.

12th July was D day for the Jazzy Sound Of Teresa Teng, a concert,  press conference. I was invited to cover the event, mostly conducted mandarin, which was not my forte' when it comes to language. So just enjoy the pictures!

Anyway, the deal is that Teresa Teng songs are still very relevant, in the daily lives every living Chinese speaking person. So popular, were the diva's songs, that every one knows at the very least, Tian Mi Mi(well, that's what I know anyway). The idea of the concert is to re-make the Teresa Teng classics with a Jazzy, Bossa, Swing feel to it.

ML, Winnie and Tay Cher Siang took turns to give their feel of the up and coming concert, which includes other Pop Pop Music artist like Z Yan and Roger Wang, plus a surprise guest artist from Taiwan in to the anticipated 2 hour long musical performance, scheduled to be held at Bentley Music Auditorium, starting 8pm, 6th August 2011(Saturday).

The press conference was held at Hakka Republic, a place featuring mostly Communist themed decor. I especially admire that big Chairman Mao red poster in the center of the bar.

After the Q & A session with members of the press, there were plenty of photo ops.

Winnie doing her girlie Robo Cop thing!!!

Members of the Chinese press, blogs and IPTV were present.

By the way, I think Lady Ga Ga was there too! Ha! Ha!

If you haven't got your tickets, what are you waiting for???

Tickets are available at:

CDRAMA(Popular Book Store), Ikano Power Center (03-77259180)
CDRAMA, Sunway Piramid (03-56377280)
CDRAMA, Cheras Leisure Mall (03-91322435)
Loud + Clear, Solaris Dutamas (03-62111683)

I've already got mine, and can't wait for the day to come for some live music.

A new record shop, did i hear it correctly?

Which record shop is the best in Malaysia? I don't think it is a hard question to answer because there isn't!

Many record shops in Malaysia are finding it hard to survive with changing consumer behaviour, rampant online piracy and simply, less interest on music as a hobby. A young adult would save or even borrow to get his first iPhone and yet he would not buy a single CD. Let's face it, music is a low priority to most because we have so many things fighting for our attention, compared to 10 years ago when life (and entertainment options) was so much simpler.

It then came as a total surprise that there are people who still want to open record shops!

We were told that the people behind this new enterprise, boldly called Loud+Clear, is from Rock Corner and he is really bold to choose the location of the newly-established Solaris Dutamas. Incidentally, not far away, the Solaris commercial area used to have a record store called "Cred" which barely lasted a year before it bites the dust. Frightening prospects, indeed.

The interior of Loud+Clear is tastefully done. This kind of fitting and ID would have cost at least RM300K, if my ID friend gets his math right. The shop is very spacious, with plenty of browsing space. Also, the far end of the shop, according to Alex, the boss, is reserved for live performances, mainly acoustic (or computer-based music) unplugged showcases. This is really cool for those artistes who want to showcase their new albums or do small gigs.

Catalogue wise, they told us that they want to bring in many hard-to-find Alternative and Indie titles but at the time of our visit, stock were not complete and orders from overseas have not arrived. But from the assurance of the store manager, Troy, it will be a haven for those who want Sigur Ros, Belle and Sebastian, Mogwai, British Ocean Scene, Kings of Convenience, The Whitest Boy Alive, She and Him..... all those alternative and indie titles that you can't find in Malaysia. Troy used to be one-half of the online alternative CD website, Music Matters, founded by Leslie Loh, that specialized in rare, underground, and alternative music so his knowledge and passion is unquestioned.

They also plan to beef up their audiophile section. At the moment, what they have are the standard audiophile fare from the likes of s2s and premium. There is a sprinkling of LPs too.

With the nice ambience for live performance in the shop, Loud+Clear plans to bring some cool acoustics acts to liven up the scene. Alex and Troy would like to invite readers here to their opening on 22th February 2011, 8pm-9:30pm where there will be a mini showcase by two of pop pop music's proteges, Winnie Ho of 2V1G and Z Yan, the Bossa Princess.

Date: 22nd Feb 2011
Time: 8pm-9:30pm

Venue: Loud + Clear, Solaris Dutamas

Address: see map attached
Reservation: Call Caffee Wong 012-3698160

Seriously, if we, the genuine music buyers don't support local record shops, there is not much hope left for the retail music industry in Malaysia.

Another Nail On The Coffin? The Music Retail Business Scene.

A future without music retail therapy ?

The music retail scene in Malaysia is depressing. In the last few years, we have seen the lost of Salem Power Station, Tower Records, and many smaller scale music retail shops, owned by music loving folks like my buddy James. His shop, Action Valley Trading, folded sometime earlier this year. James told me that his music business revenue has been on the decline since year 2005. James is now a successful financial and wealth management adviser.

Quite sometime ago, we also noted with sadness that Borders chain book store in Malaysia had decided to stop selling music and movies to reduce floor space, hence lower cost of rental to concentrate on selling books and other print ables only.

Today, I see MPH bookstores clearing their music and movie inventories, in a similar move like Borders, to sustain book sales. With that, it got me doing a count on what's left of the music retail scene in Klang Valley, which yours truly resides.

We are now left with the following music retail that I know of, while my list may not be comprehensive, please feel free to update any other music store that you as our dear reader know of and still in a healthy state of operation, that I have missed out.

1) Victoria Music, located at mainly Sg Wang Plaza, Amcorp Mall and Atria Shopping Centre. Stock quite a variety of music and staff are generally helpful. Will also special order for you if not available locally with a small deposit.

2) Rock Corner, located at Subang Parade, I Utama BU, Mid Valley Mega Mall and perhaps, other places I am un aware of. Have just as great variety of music, but with larger audiophile music section. They've got a great inventory database search system, if their staff available then is helpful enough(the guys in 1 Utama BU are normally pretty good). Otherwise the staff can be sometimes be non-attentive, especially at the Subang Parade branch, where they stock a decent variety of non-audiophile rock/pop LPs. Which is a shame!

3) CD Rama @ Popular Book Store, located in every Popular book store. Their specialty is Chinese audiophile CDs from China. They are also very supportive of Pop Pop Music releases. Most of their part timer staff is however, unhelpful(they tried to help but knows little about music or what they have in store). In other words, you're pretty much on your own and what you see is what you probably get!

4) Love Music, located in Ampang Park, one of the very first retail complex in KL, the store is small, but stocked full of music, from floor to ceiling! And should you not find the title you want, they can order for you with a small deposit. The lady boss is enthusiastic and extremely helpful.

5) The flea market stores @ Amcorp Mall every week ends. Most of these stores sells used CDs and LPs. Most of the used LPs there are of the horrible sounding Australia/New Zealand pressings. There are 2 exceptional stores, one on the 3rd floor just next to the escalator maned by a young chap that sells mostly good condition CDs, and other on the LG concourse, maned by an older gentleman that sells mostly audiophile grade LPs.

6) Various Hifi-Outlets now selling audiophile music. I hate to say, but this is where I get most of my music now days. Sad to say, my relationship with hifi stores is better than with music stores! I find most hifi stores like A&L Audio Station, CMY Audio & Visual, Nova Hifi and Center Circle Audio to have most music I want to buy in stock. Surprisingly, these people do know non-chart music better than most of the music retailers mentioned above.

In the past two years, I've bought nearly 50% of my music from Amazon web store on the www. I've also bought some of my music overseas when I am traveling. So not surprisingly the local music retail industry is not doing well, that is, if I am a representative of a typical audiophile, the last small bunch of paying customers for music that we consume.

If audiophiles typically make up of 5% of total music market customer. Of these 5%, if 50% bought stuff from the Internet or overseas, that really says something about the reality and viability of music retail sales. That means, despite a drop in purchasing customer, the local music industry is just not stocking the right merchandise perhaps for this group of customer? Well, maybe the 5% audiophile music market really means nothing to them?

I do not have any answers or remedies to the problems faced by our music retail industry. All I know is that the middle aged audiophiles are quite possibly the last batch of paying customers for music, because most youngsters I know today are raised on the environment of free downloads! Once it's free, most people don't really mind if it's MP3 or high rez files, especially when music is played back on iPods, PCs or laptops! It's just good enough.

I also think on the whole, the world wide music industry is on a slow, down ward spiral, with instantly manufactured artist like Lady GaGa, Justin Bieber and all those other guys disguised as rappers. I surely doubt if any one of them would be remembered in twenty years time! They're just too forgettable and their music too disposable. I do not see any future Elvis, The Beatles, Micheal Jackson, or even a Miles Davis in any of today's artist, in terms of musical relevance. Despite that, I think Taylor Swift and Maroon 5's chart music is pretty cool.

It's a sad, sad time for today's music industry indeed.

Beauty in Audiophile Singers

Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the prettiest of them all?

Susan Wong from Hong Kong

Lily Chen from China

Olivia Ong from Singapore

Z Yan from Malaysia

Hi-Fi is a predominately male pursuit and it is definitely not sexy. It is ugly actually, with those big huge, non-descript boxes they called loudspeakers. But modern Hi-Fi is improving on aesthetics, no doubt.

That's not the main topic of this post. We are talking about female audiophile singers who are good-looking.

You echo: Very few. Not Many. Hardly.

Ok. Let's put voice/vocals aside, this is a purely man-to-man discussion on a different aesthetics aspect of Hi-Fi.

You can't even remotely call Cai Qin pretty, not even when she was young. Lily Chen, nah, not really. Cherrie Mah, yes, albeit in a petite frame. Jane Monheit, yes (and what a bod!). Joanna Wang, no. Susan Wong, not quite and not young.

I think to this writer, the prettiest of them all is Olivia Ong from Singapore, although Olivia has gone pop recently. Olivia is not exactly drop-dead gorgeous but easy on the eyes: sweet and demure enough to bring home to meet your parents, pretty enough to show off as a trophy to your male buddies. Dang, even enjoy your Hi-Fi together with you sitting besides you on the sofa!

Now we have a local lass to join in the competition. I haven't met her yet (I am not sure about Big E) but from the photos, she looks like a cutie. I am, of course, talking about the Bossa Princess, the latest discovery from our local audiophile label, pop pop music, whose jz8 album Big E just raved about. Rumors has it that she is going to release her Chinese Bossa Nova audiophile album end of this month and I heard from the horses' mouth that it is gonna be a cracker.

So, when your audiophile singer is gorgeous-looking, would it be psycho-acoustically better sounding? Would you fantasize that she sings for you, with you and at you, no one but you alone?

Would the highs be stratospheric and sweet, the mids rich, meaty, full-bodied, tangible and the lows bouncy, layered and voluptuous?

Certainly, I want my favorite female audiophile singers to be pretty, given a choice.

ABC Records - Professional Pirate or Genuine Visionary?

Simon Tsui - Pirate or Visionary?

Classic Records warning to ABC Records (click to enlarge)

When have Diana Krall and Allison Krauss licensed their songs to ABC Records?

The huge catalog of ABC Records with its hundreds of titles, is simply mind-blogging

Chinese Audiophile label, ABC Records, is under fire from all corners and many major labels for alleged piracy and license infringement of a big scale.

Its first legal suit was the Teresa Teng series a couple of years ago. Recently, Universal HK issued another warning to ABC Records for further infringement (you can find it Review 33 ). There seems to be no remorse from ABC Records as it becomes even more blatant and daring.

We remember reading an interview on Simon Tsui, its head honcho, who said pompously: "Without ABC Records, Chinese audiophile music will go backward by 10 years." He also claimed that ABC Records has the quality of European CDs but at China's pricing.

Whether all these accusations are truth, half-truth or pure lies, ABC Records CDs still sell by big volumes. If anything, it shows that Simon Tsui is a top-notch marketeer who knows how to play and toy with audiophiles' weaknesses.

Why, you may ask, that they can't be prosecuted or sued since all there is so much evidence? Hey, We are talking about a Chinese label governed by the laws in China. And that means, everything and anything goes! There is no way major labels from overseas like Classic Records can do anything about them.

Rumors also have it that Chinese audiophile singer Shirley, is not from Paris, as claimed by ABC Records. And the recording was also not done in Canada as claimed. Shirley sings in a bar in Shanghai and the recording is done in China. So much for clever marketing and audiophile guillibility.

Too often, we audiophiles are easily fooled by all those technical proclaimation (the what XCD, ABCD, XYCD, ZZCD, German Pressing, Western Electric Sound etc etc) and the tendency to believe too readily and therefore to be easily deceived.

It makes you wonder if we ever use our ears to judge critically.

Time to wake up.

Local CD Gets Voted "CD of the Month" in Audiophile

I guess this is something worth cheering because I was there to witness the process ;-)

Love's Tapestry gets voted "CD of The Month" by Audiophile's (Fatt Siu Yum Heong) Chief Editor, Chan Ying Kong. Being an industry veteran for more than 30 years, Chan is not an easy guy to please and "CD of The Month" is not a recognition one could "buy" with money, if you get my drift. It has to be earned.

This is the 2nd time (the first being 2V1G) a Malaysian production gets recognized by HK hifi media.

Maggie told me that he will run a contest in The Star's Audiophile page to give away 20 copies of this CD. So those who want to have this album but hesitant to get it, you can wait for the contest in The Star.

p/s Another review from Taiwan's U-Audio here.
